Should I lease or buy a home solar system in South Africa?
Buying (cash, bond top-up or asset finance) usually gives clearer ownership of SSEG, warranties and resale value; leases / rent-to-own can lower the monthly cash hit but need ruthless reading of who owns the gear, who registers SSEG, and what happens when you sell. Pick the contract that matches how long you will stay in the house — ownership and SSEG registration follow from that choice.

Answer first: Before you sign a “R0 deposit solar” flyer, write down: owner of panels/inverter/battery, SSEG responsible party, insurance disclosure, early-exit / sale clauses, and whether production promises are marketing or contracted.
Buy path — what you control
- You (or your bond) own the asset; warranties register in your name — warranties · transfer on sale.
- SSEG and CoC sit with the property file you control — SSEG · CoC.
- Finance options include cash, home-loan increase, or specialised solar loans — bond / finance · finance hub.
Lease / rent-to-own — questions that catch people
- Who is the registered SSEG customer if the metro audits?
- Who pays when an inverter fails in year six — lessor, installer, or you?
- Can you sell the house mid-term without a balloon exit fee?
- Are roof penetrations restored if the lessor removes gear?
- Is the “savings guarantee” net of fixed charges and tariff migrations?

Bill maths still rules
Whether leased or bought, weak self-use and ignored fixed charges kill the story. Export credits at ~108–185 c incl. do not rescue a bad load profile — self-use · fixed charges · monthly savings · payback.
Tax and rebate notes
Household rebates and deductions change; confirm live SARS / programme rules rather than brochure claims — SARS / rebate · is there a solar tax?. Leases can change who may claim what — get a tax practitioner’s view for non-trivial deals.
When leasing can still make sense
- You need backup urgently and cash/bond capacity is blocked short-term.
- The contract names OEM warranties, response SLAs, and a clean sale novation path.
- You compare the lease IRR against a bond top-up on the same quote scope — not against a fantasy cash price.
Document pack to keep with this answer
Store the handover SoC / load / tariff screenshots beside your CoC and SSEG reference. When a future installer or buyer asks why the system behaves as it does, that folder ends arguments faster than app folklore — read a quote · selling with solar.
Side-by-side questions for any “R0 deposit” offer
| Topic | Buy | Lease / rent-to-own |
|---|---|---|
| Who registers SSEG? | Usually owner | Must be named in contract |
| Who claims OEM warranty? | Owner / installer path | Lessor path — get it in writing |
| Sale of house | Transfer pack with property | Novation, buyout or removal fees |
| Production promise | Your design risk | Only as strong as the contract clauses |
| Insurance | Disclose on household policy | Whose policy leads after hail? |
Bond top-up vs specialised solar loan
Bond rates can look attractive but extend debt against the property. Specialised solar loans may be shorter with equipment as context. Compare total interest, initiation fees, and whether early settlement is cheap — bond finance · finance hub · 5 kW cost bands · 10 kW cost bands.
Body corporate and estate leases
Sectional title and HOA rules can block third-party owned arrays on common property even if a lessor is eager. Get trustee approval in writing before any lease starts — sectional title · estate / HOA.
Consumer-protection habits
- Cooling-off and cancellation clauses in plain language.
- No verbal “NERSA will pay you retail rate for export” claims.
- Same scope on the lease schedule as on the electrical design (usable kWh, not only sticker).
- Independent CoC electrician named, not only a sales agent.

Worked cash-flow sketch (illustrative)
Cash buy: R180 000 hybrid displacing R1 600/month energy ≈ simple 9–10 year energy payback before fixed charges and maintenance — actuals vary wildly by tariff and self-use. Lease at R2 200/month for 10 years costs R264 000 nominally; if savings are only R1 400/month after fixed charges, you are cash-flow negative unless backup value is priced in. Always remodel with your 12-month bill pack — read the bill · monthly savings · payback.
Who carries import-duty and FX risk
Some leases quote today’s price while equipment is still offshore. Confirm whether duty, freight and FX sit with the lessor or become a variation order — especially after battery import-duty news cycles — import duty news.
Exit on emigration or forced sale
Ask for a written buyout schedule year by year. Ambiguous “fair market value” clauses create fights when a relocation is already stressful. Pair with warranty transfer rules — warranty transfer · selling with solar.
EV and heat-pump add-ons on leased PV
Lessors may restrict DB changes or wallbox adds. If you plan an EV in 12 months, put diversity rights in the contract now — install order · EV from solar · charger cost.
Document checklist before any signature
- Full equipment schedule with usable kWh and NRS inverter family.
- SSEG responsibility named.
- Insurance party named for hail, theft and surge.
- Buyout table and sale novation process.
- Service response times and after-hours Stage support.
- What happens if the lessor’s financing bank changes hands.

Judge brands on paperwork, not pitch
When leases bundle specific packs, read the OEM PDF yourself. Solar MD longevity examples (12-year / 84 MWh-class among peers), Freedom Won, BlueNova, BYD and Pylontech each have different claims desks — the lease does not replace the PDF — warranty checks · warranties overview.
Bottom line for most suburban owners
If you can cash or bond the system inside a comfortable debt plan, buying usually keeps SSEG, warranties and resale cleaner. Leasing can bridge a cash crunch when the contract is unusually clear on ownership, metro registration and exit maths — most flyer leases we see are not that clear. Price backup value honestly: Stage resilience is real, but it is not the same as a guaranteed retail-rate export cheque.
Next steps: gather 12 months of bills, request one buy quote and one lease quote on identical usable kWh, then score them with check a quote and how to read a quote. Related finance: bond · tax questions.
Whatever path you choose, insist on NRS 097-compliant gear, a lawful CoC, and metro SSEG steps named in the paperwork. Financing method never excuses an unsafe or unregistered install — NRS 097 · SSEG · CoC.
Ownership, SSEG and sale — the three clauses
Who owns the hardware at month 1, month 60 and month 120? Whose name sits on the SSEG file and OEM warranties? What does the buyer inherit if you sell in year 4? If the contract is fuzzy on any of those, price the ambiguity into the comparison against a cash or bond quote — subscription 10-year · warranty transfer · selling with solar.
Normalise to usable kWh-year
A cheap monthly fee on a tiny pack can look better than a cash hybrid until you divide total payable by usable kWh-years of Stage cover. Include exit fees, meter migrations and insurance schedule updates — usable kWh · bond finance · read a quote.
When lease still makes sense
Cash-flow constrained households that value Stage cover now, with clear ownership at term end and documented compliance, can still prefer lease — if two cash quotes were compared on the same brief first.

Quick questions
Can I take leased panels when I move?
Usually no — read the contract. Many residential leases are site-bound; removal may trigger fees and roof make-good.
Does a lease include SSEG registration?
It should say so explicitly. If not, assume you will fight the metro later — walk away or amend.
Is rent-to-own the same as a loan?
Not always. Ownership transfer timing, residual values and who insures the asset differ — compare APRs and exit clauses line by line.
