Compliance
What is a solar Certificate of Compliance (CoC) in South Africa?
A Certificate of Compliance (CoC) is a legal electrical safety document issued by a registered installation electrician confirming the work meets SANS 10142 / applicable electrical regulations. For solar, you need a CoC for the installation — it is not optional, does not replace SSEG registration, and is usually required for insurance and municipal paperwork.
CoC vs SSEG vs PV GreenCard
- CoC — legal electrical safety sign-off.
- SSEG registration — distributor authorisation to connect generation/storage to the grid.
- PV GreenCard — SAPVIA industry quality/as-built programme; helpful, not a legal substitute for the CoC.
Red flag: any quote that treats the CoC as “optional” or “later”.
What to demand on the quote
Itemised CoC, who issues it, and that SSEG application/commissioning docs are included or clearly priced. See check a quote.
