Solar finance in South Africa
Cash is not the only path. Banks, rent-to-own and pay-per-kWh models all exist — the right one depends on credit, ownership preference and whether savings cover the monthly repayment.
| Route | You own it? | Typical shape |
|---|---|---|
| Bank green / personal loan | Yes, from day one | Fixed term (often 24–84 months); rate usually referenced to prime |
| Bond further advance | Yes | Folded into home loan term; often competitive if equity exists |
| Rent-to-own | After final payment | Monthly for ~5–7 years; affordability checks common |
| Subscription / rental | Usually never | Ongoing monthly; provider owns the kit |
| PPA (pay per kWh) | Usually never | Pay for energy produced; contract terms matter |
We do not publish live lender rates or kit EMIs here — they change. Ask quoting installers which finance partners they work with and compare total cost of ownership, not only the monthly figure.
Questions to ask before you sign
- What happens if you sell the house?
- Who owns the CoC and warranties?
- Are maintenance and inverter replacement included?
- Is the monthly payment less than expected bill savings (cash-flow positive)?
