Costs
How much does a 5 kW solar system cost in South Africa in 2026?
A fully installed 5 kW hybrid system with a 5–10 kWh lithium battery is typically quoted at about R72 000 to R120 000 in 2026, according to published market ranges for Johannesburg, Pretoria and national price guides. The battery is the biggest swing factor, at roughly a quarter to two-fifths of the price. On a Cape Town home that cuts 400 kWh a month of grid use, that is around five years’ payback.
Updated 27 October 2026 · Tariffs quoted are the 2026/27 municipal year (from 1 July 2026) unless stated.
A “5 kW system” usually means a 5 kW hybrid inverter with about 5 to 6 kW of panels and a lithium battery. It is the most common size for a three-bedroom South African home. The figures below are published ranges, not quotes, and they move. Use them to spot a quote that is far out of line.
Published 2026 price ranges for a complete 5 kW system
| Source | What is included | Range |
|---|---|---|
| EnergyBee, Johannesburg market range | Panels, hybrid inverter, 5–10 kWh lithium battery, mounting, wiring, CoC | R72 000 – R108 000 |
| EnergyBee, Pretoria market range | Same scope | R71 000 – R107 000 |
| SolarZA national guide (Jan 2026) | 10 × 550 W panels, hybrid inverter, 5–10 kWh battery, installation | R80 000 – R120 000 |
| OurPower 2026 estimate | 5 kW panels only / + 5 kWh / + 10 kWh battery | R65 000 / R110 000 / R145 000 |
The spread between guides is mostly battery size and brand. The OurPower table is noticeably higher than the other three, so treat it as the top of the market rather than the middle. EnergyBee also publishes its own national kit price for a 5 kW system with a 10 kWh battery at R74 500 to R90 500; that is a retailer’s price, shown here only for comparison.
Where the money goes
SolarZA’s cost split for a complete hybrid system is a useful sense check:
- Battery: 25–40% of the total, the biggest variable.
- Hybrid inverter: 20–30%.
- Panels: 15–25%.
- Installation and wiring: 10–20%.
- Mounting and accessories: 5–10%.
If a quote is cheap overall but the battery line is suspiciously low, ask for the exact model, its usable kWh and its South African warranty document. If installation is under 10%, ask what is excluded: DB board work, surge protection, the Certificate of Compliance and SSEG paperwork are the usual gaps. Our DB upgrade answer and surge protection answer explain those items.
What 5 kW actually buys you
A 5 kW inverter can supply about 5 kW at once. That covers lights, fridges, TVs, Wi-Fi, a pool pump and a kettle, but not a kettle, oven and geyser element all at the same time. Panels are often sized slightly above the inverter (“oversizing”) so the system produces more in mornings, afternoons and winter. How many panels you need depends on roof direction and how much you use in daylight; see how many panels do I need and what size inverter.
Payback on real tariffs
Payback is the installed price divided by the yearly saving. Our payback answer works an example on Cape Town Home User 2026/27 rates: cutting grid use from 800 kWh to 400 kWh a month saves about R1 650 a month, or roughly R19 800 a year.
- At R95 000 installed, that is about 4.8 years.
- At R120 000 installed, about 6.1 years.
Those numbers only hold if you really use most of what the panels make. A household that is out all day and exports its midday surplus will save less, because exports earn roughly a third to a half of the buy rate in most metros. Fixed charges also stay; see why your bill can stay high after solar.
Choosing the battery: the line that decides the price
Battery choice sets both the price and how long the system keeps saving money. Compare the warranty in years and in energy throughput, and check who honours it in South Africa:
- Solar MD SS4160 (16 kWh): 12 years or 84 MWh of throughput to at least 60% of nominal capacity, under its South African warranty statement (revision 10 October 2025). Made in Cape Town; installers who put longevity first often shortlist it because newer modules stay compatible with older stacks.
- Freedom Won eTower 2: 5 years or 4 000 cycles on the current spec sheet; a strong local brand, physically larger than most wall units.
- BlueNova SBB: the BN52V-280-14.5k was listed at R54 999 incl. VAT on EcoHub when we checked (out of stock, 2–3 week lead time); distributed widely through ACDC Dynamics.
- Pylontech, Hubble, Sunsynk and BYD: common in 5 kW quotes. Ask for the local warranty document, and with Pylontech ask the questions in our swelling answer.
A 5 kWh battery keeps the price down but may not carry a busy home through the whole evening. If budget is tight, a battery-ready hybrid inverter now and a battery later is a sensible route; check adding a battery later first, because not every battery fits every inverter. Watch the news too: ITAC has recommended a 15% customs duty on fully assembled imported lithium packs, which is covered in our import duty report.
Where installers buy the kit
Most installers buy panels, inverters and batteries through electrical and solar wholesalers such as Herholdt’s, ARB Electrical, Voltex, ACDC Dynamics, DBS Energy and SONAH Group. Prices between them differ by a few percent, which is rarely what makes or breaks your quote. What matters to you is that the products are sold through the brand’s authorised South African channel, so the warranty can be claimed here. Ask your installer which wholesaler supplied the battery and inverter, and keep the serial numbers.
How to compare three 5 kW quotes
- Line up the same items: panel watts and count, inverter model, battery model and usable kWh.
- Compare warranties in years and throughput, and who honours them locally.
- Check that the CoC, SSEG registration help and surge protection are included.
- Ask for a monthly yield estimate and a self-consumption assumption.
- Work out payback yourself with your own tariff, not the brochure’s.
Quick questions
Is R100 000 a fair price for a 5 kW system?
For a complete 5 kW hybrid system with a 5–10 kWh lithium battery, R100 000 sits inside the published 2026 ranges of roughly R72 000 to R120 000. Check what battery and extras are included.
How much is a 5 kW system without a battery?
OurPower’s 2026 estimate puts panels and inverter only at about R65 000, though grid-tied systems without a battery are often cheaper depending on inverter type.
How long does a 5 kW system take to pay back?
Often about five to six years on Cape Town 2026/27 rates if you use most of the solar yourself. Out-of-home-all-day households take longer.
