Is there still a SARS solar tax rebate in South Africa?

No active individual solar panel tax rebate is running for new installs in 2026. The SARS personal solar energy tax credit applied only to qualifying new PV panels first used between 1 March 2023 and 29 February 2024 (25% of panel cost, capped at R15 000). Late claims for that window follow SARS rules — new installations today should not assume a rebate.

What the closed rebate covered

Individuals (not businesses) could claim against personal income tax for new unused panels ≥275 W at a primary residence, connected to the DB, with CoC and invoices. Batteries and inverters were outside the panel-only credit design.

Always verify current guidance on sars.gov.za — this is not tax advice.

What still improves the maths

  • Bill savings from self-consumption
  • Load shedding resilience value
  • Bank green loans / finance (see solar finance)
  • Businesses: ask a tax practitioner about capital allowances — separate from the closed personal rebate
