Tariffs

Is there a solar tax if I register SSEG in South Africa?

There is no separate national “solar tax” for registering an SSEG system. What does change is your electricity tariff: distributors typically move SSEG customers onto a tariff with fixed network/admin charges and (where offered) lower export credits than the retail import rate. Self-consumption remains the main savings lever.

What people confuse with a “solar tax”

  • Monthly network / capacity / AMI meter charges on SSEG tariffs
  • Homeflex or municipal SSEG fixed charges (often similar fixed costs to non-SSEG customers on some Eskom products)
  • Lower feed-in / export rates versus what you pay to buy kWh

SALGA and municipal FAQ material stresses registration is for safety and planning — not a punitive solar levy. Confirm your metro’s schedule.

Eskom residential note

Eskom has run zero registration-fee campaigns for many small residential SSEGs (check current exemptions and Homeflex credits). Rules change — verify with Eskom or your municipality before assuming fees.
