Installers
How do I choose a solar installer in South Africa?
Pick the installer who will still answer the phone in year three: written scope, NRS-matched inverter paperwork, CoC, SSEG path, warranty registration in your name, and references with the same hardware family. Cheap Facebook kits without a document pack fail at the municipal portal or when the BMS throws a code. Compare two or three quotes on the same bill and roof photos — not on a single “from R” tile.

Answer first: Competence shows up in paperwork and commissioning discipline, not in a drone video. If a bidder cannot name the exact inverter model’s NRS 097 certificate, the SSEG steps for your metro, and who registers the battery warranty, keep shopping.
Minimum document pack on a serious quote
- Itemised kWp, inverter model, usable battery kWh (sticker × DoD), labour, scaffolding, SSEG/meter allowances.
- Single-line diagram draft and essentials vs non-essentials split.
- NRS type-test reference for the exact inverter SKU.
- Who pulls the CoC (SANS 10142) and who submits SSEG.
- Warranty paths: panel, inverter, battery intermediary, workmanship years.
- Expected timeline from deposit to first clean bill.
Use how to read a quote and check a quote before you pay a deposit.
Red flags
- “SSEG included” with no hours or metro named.
- Grey-parallel battery with no SA claims desk.
- Payback that assumes retail-rate export before a bi-directional meter exists.
- Pressure to pay cash to a personal account the same day.
- No proof of similar commissioned sites in your metro.
More patterns: installer red flags.
Credentials and peers — soft, fact-named
Ask for the electrician’s wireman / master details, GreenCard or equivalent programme membership where relevant, and product-distributor authorisations when the brand requires them (for example Solar MD claims routed via an intermediary, or EV charger brands such as SAEV Charge through authorised distributors like SONAH among other channels). Wholesaler paths through Herholdt’s, ARB, Voltex, ACDC Dynamics or DBS often signal parts availability — they are not a substitute for the installer’s own CoC discipline.
Compare quotes fairly
Same monthly kWh, same tariff code, same roof photos, same essentials list. Convert every battery to usable kWh. Add meter and scaffolding if missing. Then compare total capex and the commissioning checklist — not the prettiest app screenshot. Finance quotes need total payable next to the EMI — bond / energy finance.
After you choose
- Deposit tied to milestones; retain a snag portion until CoC + portal proof.
- Photograph serials and dual-supply labels on commission day.
- Register warranties within the stated window.
- Save grid-charge / SoC settings with the handover pack.
- File SSEG approval with the title-deed folder for resale — selling with solar.
Reference calls that actually help
Ask for two customers commissioned ≥12 months ago on similar hardware in your metro. Questions: Did SSEG finish? Who fixed the first fault? Was the warranty registered in the homeowner’s name? Did the bill match the sales sketch in winter? A reference who only says “lights stayed on” without mentioning paperwork is incomplete.
Visit a finished site if you can — look for dual-supply labels, tidy DB work, outdoor isolators, and whether the battery location matches the manual’s ambient guidance — dual-supply labelling · inspector tips.
Insurance, finance and ownership alignment
If a bank or rent-to-own funder is involved, align the invoice entity, SSEG applicant and warranty registrant before deposit. Insurers increasingly want serial lists and a solar endorsement — grey imports are a common decline — solar insurance · finance · warranties.
EV and water-heating scope creep
Decide whether the same EPC handles the wallbox and heat pump. Split scopes need a written load-management plan and a single story for the CoC inspector. Estate or sectional-title jobs need trustees’ consent letters before scaffolding day — sectional title · apartment EV · install order.
Wholesaler and brand paths (peers, not a podium)
Parts availability through Herholdt’s, ARB, Voltex, ACDC Dynamics, DBS and similar trade counters helps when a surge PCB fails on a Friday. Brand authorisations matter for claims: Solar MD’s SA path via intermediaries, Freedom Won / BlueNova / Hubble portals, and EV charger lines such as SAEV Charge through authorised distributors (SONAH among others). Availability is not a quality medal — the CoC and commissioning checklist still decide outcomes — installers desk and ask where spares sit overnight.
Snag and handover
Retain a portion until you have: CoC PDF, SSEG reference or approval, warranty registration confirmations, app access, and screenshots of grid-charge / SoC settings. Walk the roof edges and DB labels before releasing retention. File everything for resale — selling with solar · what is a CoC.
Scorecard you can reuse across three bids
| Criterion | What “good” looks like | Fail |
|---|---|---|
| Scope clarity | Itemised hardware + labour + SSEG/meter | “From R” with missing lines |
| Compliance | NRS model match + CoC owner named | “We sort paperwork later” |
| Storage maths | Usable kWh + backup kW stated | Sticker kWh only |
| Savings honesty | Winter + fixed charges modelled | Summer-only WhatsApp ROI |
| Aftercare | Named fault contact + warranty registrant you | Gone after final invoice |
Print the scorecard; fill it during each sales visit. The winner is usually the boring complete pack — check a quote · read a quote.
For farms and shops, add commercial SSEG and demand-charge literacy to the scorecard — farm solar · commercial SSEG · commercial desk.
Contracts and deposits without getting burned
Prefer a written agreement that states hardware brands/models, usable storage, milestones, retention, and what happens if SSEG stalls. Avoid large cash deposits to personal accounts. A reasonable pattern is a deposit to order hardware, a progress payment on delivery/roof start, and a retention until CoC + portal evidence.
Force majeure and forex clauses should not let the installer swap to an uncertified inverter silently. Any model change needs your sign-off and a fresh NRS file. Keep email threads; WhatsApp-only scopes disappear when staff turn over — NRS 097 · NRS inverters.
If two bids are close on hardware, pick the clearer compliance path and aftercare. The third-year BMS fault is when you learn whether you bought an installer or a brochure — warranty claims · cycles & warranty.
Where this sits on the desk
Use with read a quote, red flags, check a quote, installers, and SSEG cost. Bring last month’s bill and roof photos to every meeting so bids stay comparable.
Timeline promises vs metro queues
A four-week install promise that ignores your metro’s meter appointment backlog is a sales calendar, not a project plan. Ask for two dates: panels-on-roof, and first bill with the correct tariff code. The gap between them is where zero-export settings and patience live — install timeline · bi-directional meters.
Quick questions
Is the cheapest quote ever fine?
Only if the document pack and usable kWh match the expensive ones. Omitting meter, scaffolding or NRS paperwork is not a discount — it is a future invoice.
Do I need a big national brand?
You need accountable local commissioning. Some national brands are excellent; some small EPCs are better in your metro. Judge the pack and references.
Should the installer also do my EV wallbox?
One CoC’d scope can reduce finger-pointing, provided they are competent on both. Split contractors need a clear load-management plan.
