Battery depth of discharge (DoD)

Nameplate kWh is not the same as usable kWh. DoD — how deeply you regularly discharge — sits at the centre of runtime and warranty.

Answer first: If a battery is 10 kWh nameplate and the warranty allows 90% DoD, plan on roughly 9 kWh usable before inefficiencies. Always use the usable figure when comparing quotes.

  • Shallower cycling can extend calendar life; hybrid systems often cycle daily.
  • Warranty documents specify retained capacity over years or throughput — read them.
  • Installer settings (min SoC) should match the brand’s guidance.
