Why does my hybrid inverter trip on overload during load shedding in South Africa?

Island-mode overload trips usually mean the essential board peak (geyser, stove, pump, EV) exceeds the inverter continuous or surge rating once the grid is gone — fix the board split or the habit, not by bridging protection.

Answer first: List every essential circuit and its running watts. If the sum (plus motor surge) beats the inverter island rating, move loads or sequence them — essentials · geyser on backup · aircon on battery · whole-house vs essentials.

Fixes that stay legal

  • Move geyser/oven to non-essential or smart-schedule them off during Stage.
  • Add soft-starters or VFDs on large pumps where the electrician specifies.
  • Upsize inverter only after a measured load log — not guesswork.

Safety

Do not defeat overload or earth-leakage devices. A CoC assumes protection works — earth leakage · CoC · DIY risks.

Overload trips: surge loads vs undersized hybrid

Kettles, angle grinders and borehole pumps create short surges that trip hybrids sized only on average kW. Check the OEM’s 10-second / 3-second surge rating against your essential board. Splitting non-essential loads beats buying a second inverter on day one. Log the portal’s peak load when trips happen.
