Loads & backup
Should fibre ONT and Wi-Fi routers sit on my hybrid backup or a small UPS?
Put the fibre ONT, primary router and work-critical access points on stable backup power — either the hybrid essentials board or a small UPS — so load shedding does not drop your alarm communicator, payments terminal or WFH link. Many homes need both: hybrid for hours-long Stage, UPS for clean transfer on picky ONTs.

Answer first: Map the signal path: street fibre → ONT → router → mesh nodes → devices / alarm communicator. Every powered hop in that path that you care about during Stage must have a power plan. Leaving the ONT on the non-backup board while the router is on backup is a classic “Wi-Fi up, internet down” failure — essentials · UPS vs hybrid · alarm / gate.
Hybrid essentials vs dedicated UPS
| Option | Strength | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid essentials board | Hours of Stage runtime with the house pack | Transfer blip; DB space; coincidence with other loads |
| Small line-interactive / online UPS | Cleaner transfer for fussy ONTs | Runtime often 15–60 min unless oversized |
| Both (UPS fed from essentials) | Blip protection + long Stage | Slightly more cost and heat |
Power budgets (illustrative)
ONT + router + one AP often sits in the 15–40 W band. That is tiny versus a geyser, but it is mission-critical. Do not spend usable kWh theorising — just place the circuits correctly and label them — usable kWh · monitoring.
WFH, payments and estate Wi-Fi
Card machines, IP cameras and cloud alarm apps fail when either power or upstream fibre drops. Estates with shared fibre rooms may leave the ONT outside your CoC scope — ask the HOA who powers the cabinet during Stage — estate / HOA · guesthouse / Airbnb.
Commissioning checklist
- Identify ONT and router breakers; move or UPS them deliberately.
- Kill main; confirm internet path restores within your tolerance.
- Note hybrid transfer time; if ONT reboots every Stage, add UPS.
- Photograph labels so cleaners and future electricians do not “simplify” the DB.
Mesh nodes and TV decoders
Backup the minimum path that keeps work and security alive. Parking every decoder and smart speaker on essentials wastes kWh — schedule strategy · whole-house · load shedding hub.

Signal-path diagram you can sketch on the quote
Street fibre → ONT PSU → router → mesh/AP → alarm communicator / laptop / camera NVR. Circle every brick that must stay alive in Stage. Anything uncircled is a voluntary outage — essentials · alarm / gate · UPS vs hybrid.
Transfer blips and fussy ONTs
Some ONTs reboot on a 20–50 ms hybrid transfer even when the router stays up. A small UPS on the ONT (ideally fed from the essentials board) hides the blip while the hybrid covers multi-hour Stage. Test by killing the main and timing internet recovery — solar during shedding · islanding.
Power maths that should not scare you
ONT + router + one AP is often under 40 W. Over eight Stage hours that is ~0.3 kWh — trivial next to a geyser, critical next to a missed card payment. Spend attention on placement, not on exotic capacity — geyser · usable kWh.
Estate cabinets and landlord fibre
If the ONT lives in a common room, your hybrid cannot power it without HOA permission. Ask who feeds that cabinet during Stage and whether a cabinet UPS already exists — estate · landlord / tenant · guesthouse.
WFH checklist
- ONT + router on essentials or UPS.
- Laptop charger on essentials if you take meetings through Stage.
- Mesh nodes that matter for the office room only.
- Photograph breaker labels after the electrician leaves.

Small UPS shopping notes (homeowner grade)
- Prefer pure sine if the ONT OEM warns about stepped approximations.
- Size VA for ONT+router+AP with headroom; runtime goal ≥ the longest hybrid transfer blip cluster you have seen.
- Replace UPS batteries on a calendar; a dead UPS is worse than none because it hides the problem until Stage.
- Label the UPS outlet “ONT only” so cleaners do not steal it for a kettle.

Homeowner close-out for fibre router on hybrid backup sa
On fibre router on hybrid backup sa, write the homeowner brief before you phone partners. Include twelve months of kWh or prepaid tokens, the tariff code, roof photos and Stage priorities. Demand NRS-listed equipment, a CoC path, and an SSEG story that matches export settings. Photograph serials, isolators, SoC reserves and dual-supply labels at handover. Store metro letters with OEM warranty PDFs so sale and insurance questions have answers. Re-check fixed charges after any meter or NMD change so savings models stay honest. Quick questions
Why does Wi-Fi stay up but websites fail during shedding?
Router on backup, ONT on non-backup — fix the ONT power path.
Is a cheap UPS enough alone?
For brief blips yes; for multi-hour Stage you still want hybrid essentials or a long-runtime UPS.
Do PoE cameras need the same plan?
Yes if you rely on them during Stage — budget the PoE switch on backup too.
