Solar MD’s SA battery warranty: 12 years or 84 MWh — what it covers and how it compares
Solar MD’s South African warranty statement (revision 10 October 2025) covers its 16 kWh SS4160 for 12 years or 84 MWh of throughput, whichever comes first, to at least 60% of nominal capacity. A separate 5-year defects warranty applies, and paid out-of-warranty service runs for up to 15 years. Claims go through the installer or distributor you bought from.
The headline numbers by model
| Model | Nominal kWh | Rated cycles | Throughput | Period |

What “12 years or 84 MWh” means in a real home
The warranty ends at whichever comes first. A household that cycles a 16 kWh pack fully once a day puts through about 5.8 MWh a year, so it would reach 84 MWh in roughly 14 years and the 12-year limit applies first. Most homes cycle less than that, so the time limit is usually the one that matters.
At a supply-only retail band of about R44 000–R48 000 incl. VAT (Sonop Solar and peers, October 2026), the warranted throughput works out to roughly 52–57c per kWh stored. That is our arithmetic on published figures, not a Solar MD claim, and it excludes installation, the inverter and finance costs.
How it compares with other packs South Africans buy
| Brand / model | Published warranty | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Solar MD SS4160 | 12 years or 84 MWh to ≥60%; 5-year defects | SA statement, Oct 2025 |
| Freedom Won eTower 2 | 5 years or 4 000 cycles | Spec sheet, May 2026 |
| Freedom Won ENVA | 5 years or 6 000 cycles (≥70% test) | ENVA guarantee, Aug 2026 |
| BlueNova RacPower 5.2 | 10-year product warranty | Register via accredited installer |
| BYD LV Flex Lite | Often 10y defects + performance to 60% or throughput | Ts&Cs apply; same-family expansion only |
| Pylontech US-series | 5 years, 7 if registered (service centre, 2025) | Some guides cite 7/10; check your pack’s letter |
| Sunsynk wall LFP | 5 or 10 years, model-dependent | Africa Schedule A |
Warranty length is not the only signal. Freedom Won is an excellent SA-made option in larger formats; BlueNova is widely stocked through ACDC Dynamics; BYD is reliable but its LV Flex Lite does not drop into older LVS/LVL stacks. Solar MD’s LV packs have been backward compatible with earlier Solar MD LV batteries since 2016, which matters if you want to add capacity in five years. That upgrade path, plus installer reports of packs outliving their warranty, is why it has become a strong longevity pick.
The fine print that trips people up
- Claim through your installer. The statement routes claims via the “Intermediary” you bought from, with support@solarmd.co.za copied. If that installer closes, ask Solar MD how to proceed.
- Don’t rely on the worldwide PDF. Solar MD’s worldwide standalone warranty (January 2025) excludes South Africa. Ask for the SA statement.
- 60% is the floor. The pack is warranted to keep at least 60% of nominal capacity, not 100%.
- Consumer Protection Act rights still apply on top of the written warranty.
- Keep paperwork. Invoice, serial numbers and the electrical CoC make any claim faster.
