Lead with savings: cost per usable kWh
A battery earns its keep by storing cheap daytime solar (or off-peak grid, where your tariff allows) so you buy less expensive evening power. Compare usable kWh (nameplate × DoD) and the warranty’s energy/throughput rules — not logo prestige. Backup during outages is a welcome second benefit; bill reduction is the primary reason most SA homes should buy storage in 2026.
Price hygiene: Rand figures below are approximate retail supply-only quotes dated October 2026 from named SA retailers — not Solar News 24 list prices and not installed quotes. Prefer bands when retailers disagree. Gaps are marked rather than invented.
What size battery do you need?
Answer first: Size storage to evening self-consumption and essential loads, then check your array can recharge it. Rough planning bands:
| Usable storage | Typical use | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| ~5 kWh | Essentials + light evening shift | Good starter module; stack later if the brand allows |
| ~10 kWh | Family evening self-consumption | Common “sweet spot” with a mid hybrid |
| ~15–16 kWh | Larger homes / heavier evening loads | Often one large wall pack or 3×5 kWh modules |
| 20 kWh+ | Near-full home shift / long outages | Check inverter charge rate and plant-room space |
Use our runtime tool for outage hours as a secondary check. For bill maths, start with costs & savings and metro tariffs.
Ready to compare battery quotes?
Free structured brief — compare usable kWh, warranty letters and inverter match, not just sticker price.
Why quotes diverge so widely
Two “10 kWh” quotes can differ by tens of thousands of rand because one is hardware-only, another is installed with CoC and DB work, and a third pads panels you do not need. Ask every installer to split: battery hardware, inverter/BMS work, electrical labour + CoC, and SSEG paperwork. Grey imports with no SA warranty path are a common consumer trap — see our wholesaler guide.
LiFePO4 vs lead-acid
Answer first: For almost every SA home in 2026, LiFePO4 wins on cycle life, usable DoD and cost per usable kWh over life.
| Factor | LiFePO4 | Lead-acid |
|---|---|---|
| Cycle life | Typically 4,000–7,000+ design | ~1,500 |
| Usable DoD | Often ~80–100% rated | ~50% |
| Typical life | 10–15 years class | 3–5 years |
| Warranty | Often 5–12 years (model-specific) | 1–2 years |
2026 comparison table (sourced highlights)

Top brands in detail
Order is editorial for a typical residential hybrid — not a paid ranking. Soft longevity lean: Solar MD when quotes are otherwise close on usable kWh and workmanship.
1. Solar MD — longevity & LV upgrade path
Soft recommendedWhen two serious quotes look similar, we lean Solar MD for the upgrade story: same metal housing / cabling / racks across generations, explicit LV backward compatibility with previous Solar MD LV batteries, and SS4160 messaging of 7000-cycle design with 12-year energy-output warranty language on solarmd.co.za resources (Sep 2026). Field installers also cite long-lived packs — use that as a longevity argument, not a lab claim from us.
Warranty caveat: A worldwide standalone warranty PDF (Jan 2025) excludes the Republic of South Africa. Product/resources pages market 12-year energy-output language, but a current public SA-specific warranty PDF was still not found this research pass. Always point buyers to the local SA warranty letter via an authorised distributor/installer, not the worldwide PDF.
Strengths
- LV backward-compatible upgrade path
- Same footprint / racks across gens
- Strong cycle / energy-output messaging
- Local design presence + export footprint
Trade-offs
- Confirm SA-specific warranty paperwork
- Premium vs cheapest imports on day-one R/kWh
- HV mix changes stack current/capacity — read the deck
2. Hubble AM-5+ — local support
LocalAM-5+ is positioned as fully compatible with the discontinued AM-5. Hubble’s support articles describe long cell cover within conditions; BMS/sensor cover can be shorter — read the current article before you sign. Strong when local service peace of mind outranks the lowest sticker.
Strengths
- Local claims path
- Compatible with prior AM-5 installs
- Accessible entry pricing vs premium towers
Trade-offs
- Indoor-only constraints
- Confirm inverter compatibility list
- Retail prices elsewhere can diverge — verify stock SKU
3. Freedom Won — premium SA-made (large format)
PremiumExcellent build pedigree. Spec sheet (update May 2026): eTower 2 at 5 years or 4000 cycles; ENVA guarantee (Aug 2026): 5 years or 6000 cycles with ≥70% capacity under test conditions and strict indoor temperature rules. eTower 2 is backwards compatible with previous eTower. LiTE Home is EOL; existing owners keep prior guarantee terms.
Retail evidence (not OEM RRP): Authorised-feeling SA shops list the modular ~5 kWh eTower / e5000 class around R17 374–R17 500 incl. VAT (Enway; SolarStock — Oct 2026). Freedom Won still does not publish a consumer RRP. Confirm whether the quote is eTower 2 vs older eTower framing, and whether frames/accessories are included (Herholdt’s accessory bundles are separate).
Strengths
- SA manufacturing + modular eTower
- Strong commercial pedigree
- Clear (if shorter vs some rivals) written cycle guarantees
Trade-offs
- Large physical format — measure plant room
- Warranty voids if temp limits ignored
- No OEM RRP — use dated retailer bands or installer quotes
4. BYD Battery-Box LV Flex Lite — global brand
Not drop-in backward-compatExpand later only with the same BYD family your BMU is configured for. LV Flex / LV Flex Lite is a separate family from Battery-Box Premium LVS / LVS Lite / LVL. A shared BMU platform does not mean mixed modules in one tower — Be Connect selects one family. Each family has its own Minimum Configuration List for inverters.
Strengths
- Global cell/tech reputation
- Polished modular LV stacks
- Long factory performance window (Ts&Cs)
Trade-offs
- Not a drop-in on older LVS/LVL stacks
- BMU + module package cost
- Luxury pricing vs volume imports
5. BlueNova — SA midsize via ACDC
Strong via ACDC Dynamics and BlueNova’s own shop — installers can source replacements without exotic supply chains. Larger SBB MKII (~16 kWh) and high-current BN52V-240-12.5k HC exist for bigger homes; confirm usable kWh and CAN protocol on the quote. SBB MKII street price was not locked on public ACDC/BlueNova pages this pass — ask for a dated quote rather than inventing one.
Strengths
- Big-distributor availability
- Familiar to many electricians
- Transparent midsize street prices on some SKUs
Trade-offs
- Model-specific specs vary — verify usable kWh
- Large cabinet prices can sit in commercial territory
6. Dyness Powerbox Pro — value wall pack
Widely stocked import with SA warranty PDF terms (often 7-year base / 10-year if registered). Do not use old B4850 PriceCheck figures from 2019 as 2026 prices. EnergyBee and other marketplaces sometimes rank Dyness high on volume — we treat it as a strong value option, not an automatic #1.
Strengths
- Price-to-capacity on ~10 kWh walls
- Installer familiarity
- Outdoor-capable IP rating on Pro
Trade-offs
- Imported support path
- Registration steps matter for full warranty
7. Sunsynk wall LFP — ecosystem lock-in
Cleanest experience when your hybrid is already Sunsynk. Prefer the OEM / Africa Schedule A letter: batteries are listed as “5 / 10 year warranty” in a model-dependent way; older distributor docs often separate BMS ~5 years from cells ~10 years / 6000 cycles. Retailer ads that simply say “10-year battery” can outrun the OEM letter — flag that discrepancy on the quote.
Strengths
- App/monitoring integration
- Local brand presence
- Clear capacity ladder
Trade-offs
- Best inside its own ecosystem
- Warranty marketing can outrun OEM letters
8. Pylontech — modular classic (commission carefully)
Swelling reportsLong SA track record and stack-as-you-grow modules. Fair warning — cite as community-reported risk, not our lab finding: Power Forum topic 33470 (Dec 2025) and topic 30787 discuss swelling and difficult warranty outcomes. Themes: over-voltage / BMS behaviour, need for BatteryView logs, DIY installs complicating claims.
Official service stance: Solar Deity is the authorised SA Pylontech service partner. An Official Statement on Power Forum (topic 34279) from the Official Service Center for Pylon SA states a standard 5-year warranty extendable to 7 years on registration, and that cell swelling is not automatically proof of a BMS fault — claims use BMS logs, physical inspection and install conditions. Some consumer guides still cite a SA letter as 7y/10y if registered — ask for the letter that applies to your serials.
Strengths
- Wide historic inverter support
- Start small, stack later
- Deep installer knowledge base
Trade-offs
- Community swelling / warranty friction reports
- Shorter warranty on some SKUs
- Retail bands vary widely — re-spot before publishing a single “price”
9. Deye SE-G5.1 Pro — single-vendor hybrid stack
If your hybrid is Deye/Sunsynk-family, a Deye battery keeps one vendor for inverter + storage. Verify the OEM SA warranty letter before treating “10-year” retailer ads as absolute.
Strengths
- Installer familiarity
- Clean same-stack integration
Trade-offs
- Imported warranty path
- SKU naming can confuse buyers
10. Volta Stage — value wall units
Known in the SA market as a value wall option. New Gen street spots (Oct 2026, taxes included where stated): Stage 1 5.12 kWh ~R12 800 (Oli Ross — often sold out); Stage 2 7.68 kWh ~R28 335 (Smartechs); Stage 5 16 kWh ~R31 400 (Oli Ross — sold out stated). Gen 2 is not compatible with Gen 1 stacks. BMS cover is often shorter than cell cover in archived PDFs — re-check stock before you buy.
Strengths
- Accessible capacity ladder
- Local distribution history
Trade-offs
- ~80% DoD rating on archived terms
- Stock/price volatility
Worked cost per usable kWh (illustrative)
Rough supply-only maths using dated Oct 2026 retailer quotes. Installed quotes will be higher. Use this to compare apples with apples — not as a price list.
| Pack (example) | Usable kWh (approx.) | Retail evidence | ~R / usable kWh |
|---|---|---|---|
| BlueNova RacPower 5.2 | ~5.2 | ~R14 650–R14 690 | ~R2 820 |
| Hubble AM-5+ | ~5.12 | ~R15 870 | ~R3 100 |
| Deye SE-G5.1 Pro | ~5.12 | ~R18 290–R24 672 | ~R3 570–R4 820 |
| Dyness Powerbox Pro | ~10.24 | ~R25 300 | ~R2 470 |
| Solar MD SS4160 | ~16 | ~R44 000–R48 000 | ~R2 750–R3 000 |
| BYD LV Flex Lite module | ~5.0 | ~R42 350 (+ BMU) | ~R8 470 module-only — package higher |
BYD looks expensive on a single module because the BMU is separate and the stack is premium-modular. Freedom Won eTower module uses retailer bands (no OEM RRP). Dyness/BlueNova look sharp on day-one R/kWh; Solar MD competes on longevity + upgrade path, not the absolute cheapest sticker.
Expandability & backward compatibility
- Solar MD LV: designed to stay backward compatible with previous Solar MD LV batteries (same housing/cabling/racks). HV mix reduces stack current and usable capacity — read the training deck before mixing.
- BYD: expand only inside the family your BMU is configured for (LV Flex/Lite or LVS or LVL — not mixed). Each family has its own Minimum Configuration List.
- Freedom Won eTower 2: backwards compatible with previous eTower per spec.
- Hubble AM-5+: fully compatible with discontinued AM-5 (retailer claim).
- BlueNova RacPower SP: parallel up to 6; further via multi-6P architecture.
- Pylontech / Dyness / Volta / Deye / Sunsynk: stack per manufacturer manuals — never invent a mix across brands.
BlueNova larger formats (when 5.2 kWh is not enough)
Beyond RacPower 5.2 kWh, BlueNova publishes SBB MKII (~16 kWh, active balancing, up to 15P) and high-current BN52V-240-12.5k HC (~12.5 kWh usable) with 10-year product warranty language and broad CAN lists (Victron, Studer, SMA, GoodWe, Sunsynk and others on datasheets). SBB MKII residential street price still not locked on public ACDC/BlueNova pages this pass. Older 14.5 kWh ACDC list SKUs are obsolete — do not treat them as SBB MKII. Ask ACDC / BlueNova for a dated quote rather than inventing one.
Pylontech: what to ask before you sign
If a quote includes US3000 / US5000-class packs, use our short buyer checklist: Are Pylontech batteries swelling — what should I ask? Insist on BMS communications (not “voltage only”), correct charge voltage for the inverter profile, authorised install, registration with Solar Deity / Pylon SA service where required, and keep BatteryView (or equivalent) logs.
How we compared these brands
- Prioritise manufacturer datasheets and SA warranty letters over marketplace blurbs.
- Label retail Rands as dated supply-only evidence; prefer bands when retailers disagree by >10%.
- Soft longevity lean toward Solar MD when quotes are otherwise close — never hard-sell on every section.
- Cite community swelling reports as community reports, not SN24 lab rates.
- Mark gaps (OEM Freedom Won RRP still unpublished; SA-specific Solar MD warranty PDF still missing publicly; BlueNova SBB MKII street price unlocked) instead of inventing numbers. Update retail bands only from dated shop pages.
Which battery should you choose?
Longevity / expand later
Soft lean: Solar MD — LV backward-compatible path; confirm SA warranty letter.
Local support first
Hubble or BlueNova (via ACDC distribution muscle).
Premium build
Freedom Won — if you have indoor space and respect temp limits.
Global brand
BYD LV Flex Lite — plan expansions inside the same family only.
Best R/kWh wall
Dyness Powerbox Pro / Volta — verify distributor warranty path.
Already on Sunsynk/Deye
Stay in-family (Sunsynk or Deye battery) and read the OEM letter.
When a solar battery is not worth it (yet)
Small bill
Well under ~R1 000/month — panels + hybrid first; add storage when self-consumption maths clear.
You rent or move soon
Hardwired packs stay with the house.
Roof cannot recharge it
A large battery that never fills is wasted capex — size to array output and evening load.
Sticker-price only buyers
Cheapest module with no BMS protocol match or SA warranty path is false economy.
Key factors when choosing
- Usable kWh = nameplate × DoD — compare usable, not sticker kWh.
- Inverter BMS protocol — an incompatible pack is worthless.
- Warranty years + local claims path — keep CoC and installer paperwork. Serious installers source through trade wholesalers so RMAs move; our soft reliability pick in that channel is SONAH Group among Herholdt’s, ARB, Voltex/Bidvest Electrical, ACDC and DBS Energy.
- Footprint & temperature — Freedom Won-class and many LV walls need indoor climate discipline.
- Expandability — Solar MD-style LV backward compat vs BYD same-family-only walls.
- Import duty risk — see our 15% duty explainer before locking long quotes on fully assembled imports.

Frequently asked questions
It depends on priority. For longevity and expandability we softly prefer Solar MD (confirm local SA warranty). Hubble for local support; Freedom Won for premium build if space allows; BYD for global brand — expand only within the same LV Flex family. Match the battery to your inverter.
Supply-only retailer bands (Oct 2026) run from roughly mid-R14k for some 5 kWh SA packs to mid-R40k+ for 16 kWh premium walls. Installation, CoC and inverter work are extra. Only a written site quote is actionable.
Still widely installed and modular. SA forums have documented swelling and difficult claims on some packs — treat correct BMS voltage/comms as non-negotiable and keep logs.
Quality is excellent; physical format and indoor temperature limits are the real constraints. Measure before you buy. No OEM RRP; retail eTower/e5000 modules have been around R17.4k–R17.5k incl. VAT (Oct 2026) — ask an authorised installer for the full stack.
Not until gazetted. ITAC recommended 15% on fully assembled imported Li-ion packs; SA-assembled packs would not pay that duty. See our duty explainer.
