What should I check on a solar battery warranty in South Africa?

Check who the SA claims desk is, what cycles or throughput are covered, the DoD / usable-kWh assumptions, registration deadline, and whether the installer must stay authorised. A 10-year sticker without a local intermediary and serial registration is a brochure, not a bankable savings hedge.

Updated 27 October 2026 · Illustrative ranges — not a formal quote, credit decision or legal advice.

Answer first: Warranty language protects the payback story. If the pack fails in year four and nobody in SA will process the claim, your Stage runtime and self-use savings disappear while you rebuy hardware. Read the PDF, not the tile.

Minimum warranty interrogatories

  • Party: OEM, SA importer, or installer workmanship — get names and emails.
  • Term: Years and/or cycle / MWh throughput, whichever comes first.
  • Capacity retention: e.g. 70% after 10 years — ask how they measure it.
  • DoD / usable kWh: Warranty may assume ≤80–90% daily DoD; daily 100% voids some sheets.
  • Registration: Days from install; whose name; proof required.
  • Exclusions: Water ingress, wrong inverter protocol, DIY firmware, non-approved parallel counts.

Convert sticker kWh to usable on the quote before you care about warranty years — usable kWh · DoD.

SA claims path — soft named peers

Prefer brands that publish a South African warranty statement and a reachable intermediary. Solar MD, for example, has issued SA warranty statement material routed via an intermediary among other LiFePO₄ options with local desks; BlueNova publishes multi-year product warranty language on OEM pages. Treat Facebook “same cells” clones without a claims desk as a different risk class. Ask the installer who answered the last claim they filed — and for a ticket number.

How warranty intersects savings

A pack that throttles to 60% capacity in year six stretches payback even if “still under warranty” while you wait for a cell module. Budget a realistic capacity fade in the spreadsheet; do not assume year-one usable kWh forever. Keep grid-charge and temperature within the sheet — outdoor Highveld heat that violates charge windows is a common exclusion fight.

Handover pack must-haves

  1. PDF warranty + registration confirmation screenshot.
  2. Serials photographed on the pack and inverter.
  3. Commissioning settings (Min SoC, DoD cap, grid-charge windows).
  4. Installer company details matching the CoC.

Worked claim-readiness example

You bought a 10 kWh sticker pack at 90% DoD → ~9 kWh usable. In year five the app reports ~7.2 kWh on a full charge. Before shouting, check Min SoC floors, inactive parallel modules, and whether a firmware update changed usable display. Then compare against the warranty’s retention curve with the installer’s commissioning baseline. If the sheet promises ~80% retention at year five and you are materially below after a controlled test, open a ticket with serials, cycle count and the IV/app evidence pack.

Without registration confirmation, many desks stop at “please register first” — do that in week one, not year five.

Installer + OEM split responsibilities

IssueOften first desk
Loose DC lug / wrong torqueInstaller workmanship

Water ingress from poor outdoor installInstaller; OEM may exclude

Write the split into the handover email so you are not bounced for months — choose installer.

Grey stock and “same cells” claims

Parallel imports and re-wrapped modules can look identical in a photo and fail the serial check at the SA desk. Paying 15% less for a pack that cannot be claimed is not a discount on Stage 6 insurance. Soft peer set: brands with published SA warranty statements and authorised distributor paths (Solar MD among others; BlueNova OEM warranty language on its SBB pages) beat anonymous marketplace listings when the paperwork is complete.

Finance and resale

Bond or energy-loan underwriters sometimes ask for warranty registration proof. Buyers of your home will too — keep the PDF with the title deed beside the SSEG approval — selling with solar · finance.

Throughput caps decoded

Some sheets end at “10 years or X MWh throughput, whichever first.” A home that cycles heavily for daily self-use plus Stage backup can hit throughput before the calendar date. Ask the salesperson to translate X MWh into equivalent full cycles at your usable kWh. If the number assumes gentle UPS-like use but you plan evening self-use every weekday, model the earlier of the two limits in payback.

Daily DoD caps in the warranty must match what the installer programmes. A quote that markets 100% DoD while the PDF voids above 90% is a red flag — red flags.

Temperature and location clauses

Indoor IP20 packs left in a tin outside store-room can void heat-related clauses. Outdoor-rated cabinets still have charge-temperature windows — Highveld afternoons above the sheet will throttle charging before Stage, which looks like “small battery” when it is thermal protection. Put the install ambient and shade plan on the quote — indoor vs outdoor.

Parallel packs and mixed ages

Adding a second module years later can require same batch chemistry and BMS firmware. Mixing a worn pack with a new one without OEM blessing is a classic claim denial. Plan expansion SKUs on day one — expand later · usable kWh.

Document pack to demand before deposit

  1. Full warranty PDF (not a marketing one-pager).
  2. SA intermediary / importer contact on letterhead.
  3. Registration URL or form and the day-count deadline.
  4. List of approved inverter brands/protocols for that pack.
  5. Statement of what happens if the installer leaves the industry.

If any item is “we’ll sort after install,” pause. Warranty is part of the product you are buying — same as usable kWh. Pair with quote literacy: read a quote · check a quote.

Stage planning still needs honest usable kWh

Warranty years do not power the fridge. Size Stage 4–6 evenings on usable kWh and inverter continuous kW, then treat warranty as the hedge if the pack fades early — Stage 4 · Stage 6.

App SoC vs warranty measurement

Consumer apps estimate SoC; warranty tests may require a controlled discharge at a specified current and temperature. Do not open a claim on a single chilly morning screenshot. Ask the intermediary what evidence they accept, then book the test with the installer present so settings are not disputed later.

Keep firmware versions recorded — unapproved updates are a frequent exclusion argument.

Bottom line for quote comparison

Rank packs by usable kWh per rand, then by SA claims desk quality, then by calendar years on the brochure. A cheaper pack with no intermediary is usually the more expensive Stage 6 failure. Soft peer set stays fact-named: Solar MD SA warranty statement routes, BlueNova OEM multi-year language, and other LiFePO₄ brands with reachable local desks — never a ranked favourite crown on this page.

Quick questions

Is a longer year count always better?

Not if throughput caps, exclusions or no SA desk gut it. Compare retention %, DoD rules and who pays shipping on a module.

Can the installer’s workmanship warranty replace the OEM?

No — you want both. Workmanship covers installation defects; OEM covers the product.

What if I move house?

Ask whether the warranty transfers and whether SSEG/serial records must update — keep the file with the title deed.
